ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) — Florida Highway Patrol troopers said a woman and her child are recovering after the mother most likely fell asleep at the wheel and crashed their mini van.
The incident happened in the westbound lane of I-4 before Maitland. Troopers said the woman veered off the highway and crashed into an exit sign. Then, she then took down a fence at the Spring Lake Hills Apartment Complex, crashed into a tree and ended up on the bed of a pickup truck parked at the complex.
Troopers said a total of eight vehicles were damaged when the fence came down. Flying debris also broke out windows. The woman was in the vehicle with her 11-year-old daughter.
When the crash occurred, pick up truck owner Otis Davis was inside his apartment. “Heard a loud noise, woke everyone up. Come outside, looked out the window and saw that there was a car siting on the back of my pickup truck,” he said.
Davis said he tried helping the two but the little girl was hysterical because she was sitting in the car not understanding what happened. “The mom is incoherent because she’s hurt,” Davis said.
Davis said this isn’t the first time this has happened. “About a year ago a similar thing happened to another car coming down I-4. It started coming through the fence and ended up on top of my next door neighbors car. This time it ended up on my car, my pickup,” he said.
Troopers said the mother suffered minor injuries and is recovering at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Her daughter was not injured. Charges are pending.
